Gingerich Farms
Owned and operated by the Gingerich family since 1919, Gingerich Farms is located on 200 acres of blueberry fields in Canby, Oregon. The farm incorporates holistic and sustainable agricultural practices and exports blueberries and hazelnuts to Japan, China, and Taiwan. The project involves a three-phase master plan of the site and designs for a number of individual buildings, with the objective of consolidating operations and enabling future growth and flexibility.
The master plan includes a first-phase, 15,000-square-foot packing facility; a second-phase, 6,500-square-foot office/breakroom building; and a third-phase, 15,000-square-foot freezer building. Two optional structures, a public sales room and an adjacent antique-tractor museum, are also accommodated.
The master plan separates the program elements into discrete building components, enabling flexible construction phasing as well as the creation of landscaped areas between buildings. The placement and orientation of the buildings are driven by the site's natural topography, solar orientation, and views, as well as by each facility's operational requirements. Extensive clerestories and skylights serve to daylight the work areas, while waste heat from refrigeration systems recirculate as heated wash-down water. Process water is passively treated on site and reused for irrigation. Interstitial landscaped areas maximize daylighting of the work areas, frame views of surrounding hills and fields, and provide retention areas for irrigation water.
